Tourism Nanaimo is committed to advancing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, including Call 92, by fostering partnerships that support economic reconciliation, and Call 79, by sharing Indigenous histories and living cultures in collaboration with First Nation governments. This land holds deep historical and cultural significance for the Snuneymuxw Nation, a vibrant Coast Salish people who have lived here since time immemorial, with villages reaching from the eastern coast of Vancouver Island to the Fraser River and Gulf Islands. For over 170 years, the Snuneymuxw people have endured oppressive systems aimed at denying their rights, erasing their presence, and undermining their way of life and spirituality. Despite this, they have remained steadfast, prioritizing community, Snawayalth, and their connection to the land. We honour the Snuneymuxw Nation’s enduring connection to this land and are committed to fostering relationships built on respect, collaboration, and mutual growth. Together, we aim to elevate the stories of the Snuneymuxw people, connect with the land and its rich history, and ensure that events hosted here celebrate culture, reconciliation, and education.
