HISTORIC WILLEMSTAD By tuk tuk, the group explored Willemstad’s dynamic districts of Punda and Otrobanda, connected by the floating Queen Emma Bridge. The tour showcased striking murals and urban sculptures by local artists, and brightly hued Dutch colonial architecture, including Handelskade, the iconic row of multi-coloured buildings on St. Anna Bay. HIGHLIGHTS CREATIVE WORKSHOP In Willemstad’s creative Scharloo district, the group joined renowned Curaçaoan multi-media artist Francis Sling at his studio for a paint-and-sip workshop. Easily recognized by the striking floral mural covering its exterior, the interior of the studio showcases his bold, colourful paintings and eclectic artistic works. CASE STUDY: MEDIA FAM TOUR ATTENDEES: Six writers from Canada, the US and the Caribbean GOAL: The tour was designed to showcase the island of Curaçao as a vibrant and versatile destination for events and incentive travel experiences, highlighting its appeal far beyond the beach. With deep Afro-Caribbean and Dutch influences, the island offers a culturally rich backdrop for groups. “I wanted participants to experience the island’s unique blend of culture, cuisine, natural beauty and hospitality firsthand,” says Damaris Sambo, ambassador, Curaçao Tourist Board, “so they could authentically share their experiences with their audiences. It was also an opportunity to highlight new developments, luxury accommodations and off-the-beaten-path experiences that make Curaçao stand out in the Caribbean.” VIBE OF THE PROGRAM: Sambo aimed to create an immersive and well-balanced atmosphere that allowed for both discovery and relaxation. With a mix of culturally enriching and casually luxurious experiences, the tour encouraged exploration while also providing time to unwind and soak in the island’s unique charm. “I wanted the group to feel a sense of connection—with the destination, the locals and each other—as the itinerary was designed to include shared meals, interactive experiences and small-group activities.” ACCOMMODATIONS: Attendees stayed in the heart of Curaçao’s historic capital, Willemstad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, at the Renaissance Wind Creek Curaçao Resort. The expansive 237-room waterfront property is set within the 19-century Rif Fort, which has Curaçao CULTURE, CUISINE AND CARIBBEAN BEAUTY by Rose Filice been transformed into an open-air shopping, dining and entertainment complex. Its historic stone walls create a distinctive backdrop for group gatherings. The resort is just a short walk to the Punda district—a bustling area filled with cafes, shops and Dutch-inspired architecture that comes alive during the weekly Punda Vibes celebration filled with live music, local art and craft markets. LOGISTICAL CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS: “Managing transportation for a group on a tight itinerary required careful coordination with local partners,” notes Sambo. “Planners should be aware that while Curaçao has excellent infrastructure, it’s crucial to work closely with local DMCs and vendors who know how to navigate timing, permits and seasonal weather considerations.” 62 | Ignitemag.ca | Winter 2025
